Show Notes
Ryan: "A long wait was finally ended when the lights blazed and sirens echoed round the green…. they then appeared (Billie, Mike & Tre), many of the around 15,000 crowd where at the main stage to witness a brilliant performance by Californian punks Green Day. The show was kicked off in excellent fashion with “Welcome To paradise”, Followed by “Hitchin’ a ride”, “Longview”-(for which Billie wore a mask) and then a short rendition of black Sabbath’s “iron man”. “Brain stew” was then to follow along with “jaded”. The speed then slowed as the band played their version of operation ivy’s “knowledge”. Towards the end of the song in customary fashion, Billie Joe invited a drummer on stage, the 1st was not liked by tre, so another was invited up, and he was not to tre’s standard either. Billie decided, “Fuck it, can anyone play the guitar?” He got a guitarist up, who seemed bemused by the whole thing, but never the less, played the song. After the song, the fan then asked Billie if he could play basket case, Billie replied “if you can do it, go ahead, but if you cant fucking do it, don’t try” He gave it a try, but couldn’t play it, so The guitar was removed from his shoulders and placed back on Billie’s…as the song continued, with a huge amount of the crowd singing along. The next song was “King for a day”; Billie was wearing a crown at this point. New songs “Waiting” and “Minority” where next; which went down a storm. The traditional burning of the drum kit followed, Tre looked as if he was made to burn drums, a professional drum burner!, Mike dirnt joined in the chaos, smashing his bass into the fire, and storming off. Billie looked on, strumming his guitar with force. Seconds later, he approached the microphone, and played “Time of your life” from the album “Nimrod”, Mike crouched on the stage looking on at Billie in appreciation of the song…. Tre was still wandering about looking mischievous. Green day left the stage after their hour long set. Only one word could describe their performance…. Excellent (as ever)."
