Steve Hackett: "I had been standing in the front row at the 2001 HFestvial at R.F.K. Stadium in Washington, D.C. for 7 or 8 hours, being pushed against the security barricade by the thousands of people behind me. Green Day was preparing to hit the stage next and I was about to pass out from exhaustion and thirst, so the thought of jumping over the barricade and making my way up into the stands to watch the set from a comfortable distance was looming. Something inside me said to stay put, at least for the first few songs. I was having such a great time once they started that all my feelings of being tired and worn down had melted away, and it was already a half hour into their performance. They began to play the old Operation Ivy song 'Knowledge' and suddenly the singer announces that they need someone from the crowd to get on stage and play guitar for them. With the minimal confidence that I know how to strum out a few power chords and nothing impressive in my skillset related to the stringed instrument, I promptly raise my hand and make eye contact with the little singer. Before I know it, everyone around me is pointing at me and trying to get Billie Joe's attention. The video explains the rest. It will always be a highlight in my memory bank, and appreciate it for being one of the few chances in a lifetime you get to really seize the moment and take advantage of an opportunity most won't have. The attendance at R.F.K. Stadium that day was approximately 65,000 people."
Maggie: "The HFStival was the sh^t, no question about it. Tons of bands, moshing, TWO whole days long...ahhh, it was great. I was already stoaked (sp?) to go, but a few days before the festival, HFS announced that another band had just been signed on to perform on the main stage on Sunday...huh, I wonder who (haha). It was GREEN DAY, of course. That made the experience all that more enjoyable. The day had been totally awesome so far...beyond words. Some of the bands that performed on the main stage that day include: NEW FOUND GLORY, SR-71, LIFEHOUSE, FUEL, 3 DOORS DOWN, and INCUBUS. AMERICAN HI-FI, SALIVA, ALIEN ANT FARM, and GOOD CHARLOTTE (among others) were on the street stage that day. Each band got about 30-45 minutes to play, with 15 minutes or so between performances for equipment set-up and sound check. LIVE was originally scheduled to play at 8:00 that night, but GREEN DAY needed a slot to play in, so the people at HFS gave the 8:00 time to them. After INCUBUS finished, everybody knew what was coming up next, so my friend, her brother, and I ran down for a good spot in "The Pit". We waited for like 15 or 20 minutes b/c there were tech difficulties. When BJ, Tre, and Mike came out though, it was worth all the waiting! The crowd was f^cking spazing out, I swear (and I was right in the middle of it, too!). They started with "Welcome to Paradise", then went on to play "Basket Case", and "When I Come Around". After a while, BJ just stood up on stage, strumming his guitar, and talked to everybody; "Hey, DC, how ya'll doin' tonight? Are you ready to f^cking ROCK?!" They didn't play too much from the new album, but we did get "Minority" and "Waiting" (of course). About half way through "Waiting", BJ pulled some guy up onstage to play some of the song, which was pretty cool. When he had finished, BJ made him take a stage dive! We got an encore of "Welcome to Paradise" and "Basket Case" after that, but I think that "Waiting" was probably the last song (the band finished the song when the guy dove off stage). There might have been other songs, like "Longview", but I can't remember exactly (all that second-hand weed can get to ya after a while...haha). Any way, people we moshing like crazy; circle moshes, crowd surfing, and some people even pulled up the plastic sheets off the field and surfed on those (man, those hurt 10x worse then a person when they fall on you). We thought GD was done, but oh no, Tre had to finish with a bang...if you know what I mean. Yup, out came the lighter fluid! Well, you can probably guess what happened after that. The drums went up in flames (along with a guitar or two, i think). They were throwing all kinds of sh^t into the fire, any thing they could get their hands on. Well, needless to say, that was the BEST preformance of the whole day, and the rest of the crowd definitely thought so too. So, that was Green Day's performance at the 2001 HFStival. (Green Day, Staind, and Sum-41 were definitely the best out of all!) I highly recommend anyone in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area to go to an HFStival sometime. Trust me, you'll never forget it. This was my first one, and I know I'll go back next year! Peace out."
