Kevin Moran: "the story behind the video is pretty cool though...i was an a&r rep for Giant Records back then...we were a subsidiary of Warner Bros...my friend that was managing them in Berkeley sent me the Green Day tape and i immediately heard the greatness....i saw them at Gilman Street many times and became friends, and was trying to sign them to the label...it was the time of grunge, and my bosses didnt get it....they went on tour, and i went to a few shows along the route...every show was packed....when they played san diego, i took my camera and filmed the show to show the higher ups what it was like, and what a huge following they already had....it kinda backfired on me...i gave a copy of the video to the band, they gave it to their managers, the managers knew i really wanted to sign them, but when i was at a SXSW meeting with one manager, the other guy took it to Warner Bros directly and showed them the video...they were signed the next week...and since we were a subsidiary, it made more sense to sign directly. About a year later after it exploded and was on the charts,..i was playing golf with Tre...we hadnt seen each other since they got signed...he was teeing up and stopped...looked at me, and gave me the best acknowledgement ever...he said...."dude, you are the one responsible for getting us signed....that video changed everything"....lol. That was a huge lesson in my music biz career...my bosses kicked themselves for years....i ended up leaving the company after they passed on Beck and then Everclear...i went on to work for a company that JVC owned, and signed a band called Face to Face...not quite Green Day though ;)"
Mark Hoppus: "I remember it was funny because all the talk was that Green Day were gonna be signed to a major label, and back then there were lots of arguments as to whether people should to major labels. Billie Joe was onstage and he said, 'Hey everyone, make sure you clap really loud because the executives from the label are trying to decide whether they want us to sign or not tonight, so let them know what do you think.' He was making a joke out of it which was pretty cool."
