Show Notes
KZSU: "1990 Wednesday Night Live performance of East Bay band that pretty much invented pop punk while they were still playing Gilman and small venues. Amazingly fun performance and excellent recording (transferred from old long-lost reel to reel by me). Guys are just off the hook with the banter, total performers who if not for their legendary high energy I'd think were on coke or speed. Girl-crazy silly banter abounds, with lots of great, 'This is Green Day on KZSU's WNL' that’s worth some station cred points. Even some healthy 'Cal vs. Stanford' and 'East Bay vs. West Bay' shots. Sure, Squirrel Bait invented pop punk five years before them (but they were too serious) and Nirvana channeled the Beatles (but they were too heavy and morose). Like it or not, Green Day withstood all tests and the public voted them kings of pop punk. Killer recording, from when Billie Joe Armstrong was just simply 'Bill'. Really captures the simple fact that: Bill could really play his fucking guitar and those three guys sing catchy songs really well together. Pretty much all songs are their trademark 4/4 pop punk, hooky choruses/melody, driving Les Paul/Marshall combo attacks."
